ROADTRiP! DAYS 1 & 2: Home to Flagstaff, Arizona

Hey everyone!  I finally got my information together, slide shows created, & thoughts down on paper {virtual paper of course} so I can now officially post about our vacation!  For those of you that don’t know; Codiy & I took an 11 day roadtrip from Texas to the Grand Canyon, to Venice Beach, to San Diego, & ended back at our home in Texas.  It was an amazing trip that we’d do all over again.

June 5&6th
Days 1 & 2 of our roadtrip is about getting us to Flagstaff, Arizona & the few things we were able to do once we arrived in the short amount of time we were there.

Just in case you didn't want to watch the entire slide show {*tear} or you did watch it, but you want more details {*smile}, I aim to please, so here is a break down of those first two days.

We woke up refreshed and roaring to go, but unfortunately, we left later than we wanted {2 hours to be exact} due to a packing issue.  Let’s face it, we BOTH took advantage of not having restrictions on luggage so we each had 2 suitcases and 1 storage tub… well, I had 3 suit cases, but who’s counting?  Just in case someone reading this is about to embark on our same adventure, here is a list of the stops we made along the way to Arizona:

1.  5:30 pm: Fort Woof Dog Park: Very nice dog park but it needs more shaded areas.  We only stayed 30 min due to it being over 100 degrees & humid, the dogs weren’t even playing.  We did meet some really nice people that were just as chatty at us.

2.  6:10 pm: Lisa’s Fried Chicken: The people that worked there were very nice, the restrooms were clean, and the gas was the cheapest in the area.  I was told later, and I quote, “You were in the hood girl!  Get out why you can!” Hood or not, this white girl would go there again, but the traffic getting back onto the freeway was horrible!

3.  9:55 pm: McDonalds: Very clean restrooms & a grassy median for the dogs but toooooooons of 18 wheelers that did a good job of freaking Diesel out.  The people weren’t terribly nice though, but it’s McDonalds, what did we expect?

4.  12:15 am: Wal-Mart Super Center: Open 24 hours, gas was decently priced, & the restrooms were clean.  Plus I was able to buy more Rockstars.

5.  New Mexico State Line: We have a goal to take a photo with every state sign, New Mexico was our very 1st one since making it, thanks NM!

6.  1:08 am: Russell’s Travel Plaza: This place is a traveler’s dream, ESPECIALLY if you’re traveling with dogs!  Their truck stop had the usual chotsky items for sale, nice bathrooms, etc… BUT it also had a fenced in dog run so your dogs could roam & play w/out a leash, it was fantastic.

7.  4:08 am: Waffle House: Horrible restroom! It wasn’t dirty but the toilet was halfway under the handicap bar making it incredibly hard to pee and there were a few bums hanging around the entrance creating a barrier when you tried to exit, they actually have to have an officer work the night shift there, so we didn’t stick around.

8.  4:23 am: Sky City Cultural Center: Very nice restrooms & next to a casino if you're feeling lucky.  We stopped here to let the dogs grub down on their breakfast

9.  6:25 am: Arizona State Line: We finally made it to Arizona!!

10.  7:06 am: Navajo Travel Center: This was the only place open which we found odd since it was 7:00 in the morning but it was a decent little stop, I'm just glad we found it.
11.  Meteor Landing Detour: We did drive the 8 miles off course to check it out, but we ended up not stopping due to the fact it was hot outside, it would’ve cost money, and the dogs couldn’t go inside, BUT we did see the outer wall, and that was still cool!

12. 8:45 am: La Quinta Inn & Suites: We finally arrived at La Quinta Inn & suites and there were only two rooms clean at the time of our arrival, we opted for the one that was on the 1st floor closest to grass to make it easier on all of us.  We unpacked our truck, made a make shift sandwich with our smashed bread {thanks Diesel}, & took a well-deserved 4 hour nap…

DAY 2- June 6th: Flagstaff, Arizona
…After waking up from our nap, showering, & bushing our teeth, we took the dogs to Thorpe Dog Park.  It was a huge sand pit!  The dogs got filthy there but the weather was amazing, the people extremely friendly, & we got a lot of good tips of places to stop & eat while in San Diego.  After the dogs were tired out, we stopped back off at La Quinta to spruce ourselves up for dinner

We found a place to eat that was on the show, “Diner’s Drive Ins & Dives,” Guy ate at Salsa Brava and he made it look amazing, so that’s where we went.   While waiting for our table the hotel called & alerted me about some complaints they’ve been receiving about a dog whining in our room, so poor Cody drove back to the hotel and as he was walking to our room he could hear Lashes from down the hall crying, it had been over 30 minutes!  Poor kid, she did NOT like that room and we felt so bad for the other guest.  I guess their peanut butter filled kongs weren’t good enough.  Since it was only 45 degrees outside we desided they could relax in the car while we enjoyed a nice sit down meal and it was delicious!

Their margaritas were super tasty too, different than the ones we get in Texas, these were more like a slushies

Our waitress was super nice, we found out that she was actually about to make a move to Austin, TX with her best friend who was also a bubbly Scorpio from Texas, so we hit it off with her right away.  After stuffing our faces, talking with locals, & drinking a few margaritas, we decided it was time to head back to the hotel where we all crashed!
