ROADTRiP! Days 3-6: Los Angeles

DAY 3- June 7th: Getting to LA
We didn't arrive to Venice Beach until 8:30 at night.  It takes approximately 8 hours to get there from the Grand Canyon, but we were able to keep ourselves entertained:

When we finally got to our rental house we were tired, cranky, and pissed off at our location, at first... for ONE, it was incredibly loud & there were people and bums hanging outside our house & we were next door to a bar.  SECOND, the fence surrounding our patio {which faced this busy street} was only 4.5 feet tall instead of 5 feet like I was told, & Third, the hot tub on the patio had a deck around it so when Diesel stood on it his chest was over the fence… I started freaking out!

After expressing my concerns to the owner {who is awesome} we came up with some simple solutions.  He was going to come by the next day with bamboo fencing to raise the fence for us which would fix problems 2 & 3 and by 9:30 pm Problem 1 solved itself.  Apparently after 9 o’clock our entire street becomes a ghost town, actually Venice Beach entirely does.  Our house was only 0.3 miles from the Beach and we were only a few blocks from Abbot Kinney street which is “the happen spot,” so the fact it became dead silent seemed like a miracle.  We would definitely rent this house again! {To check it out: http://www.vrbo.com/252561}

DAYS 4-6: Slide Show
If you're curious, and I hope you are, Here are ALL of the Photos from Our Los Angeles Trip:

DAY 4- June 8th: Venice Beach
We started our first day by Cody going to Home Depot and spending $7 on 15 square feet of grass {I’ll get to why in a second}.  On the way home from Home Depot he saw four people running behind a van that had its back doors open revealing a professional film camera.  After closer inspection Cody realized that one of these three people were actually carrying the Olympic torch, cool right?!
Okay, so why did Cody have to go to Home Depot for grass?  It was for the patio so Diesel could poop… seriously, we’re not making this up… Diesel refused to go anywhere but on grass.  Once he saw the grass laid out, his booty shook, he started jumping with excitement and he attended to his business, it was hilarious!!
Still waiting for the owner to get there with the fencing we decided to enjoy the weather out on our newly sodded patio and we noticed a looong line of cars piling up & people crowded around the taco truck parked across the street; we took this as a sign, walked over, and placed an order.  While waiting a HUGE gust of wind caused my dress to blow up "Marilyn Style," and I flashed anyone that was looking in my direction {thank goodness I was wearing boyshorts & not a thong}!  Shortly after the embarrassing “wind up the dress,” fiasco our order was ready.  We set up shop on the table outside and devoured our tacos, they were delicious!  It was a great way to start the day.
Around noon the manager of the property, John, came over and applied the bamboo fencing so we could finally leave the house.  We started it by walking down to Venice Beach where I got my nose re-pierced,
checked out the skate park,
Cody got a work out in,
shopped at American Apparel where I bought Cody these amazing green jeans, matching Venice Beach T-shirts, & 2 amazing tops just for yours truly:
watched funny street performers put on a show,
*Video to be uploaded Soon*

& we people watched in general {this guy was a hoot}
For dinner we met up with Clyde at Cha Cha Chicken {so good!  If you go there, order the jerk chicken}. The line was to the street & parking can be difficult, but it's well worth it.
After visiting with Clyde we came back to the house where Matt {Cody’s longest friend who now lives in LA, and I mean longest knowing, not like Stretch Armstrong} came over.  We drank a few beers, caught up on what was new, then made our way to find an open bar/restaurant on Abbot Kinney Street {which was hard believe it or not!}.

DAY 5- June 9th: Los Angeles Cram Day
Our first stop was eating lunch at Nickel Diner, which is AMAZING!
The tables are extremely close together, so it’s like you’re eating lunch with the strangers next to you, but lucky for us, the people next to us were super nice/  We talked to them for the entire duration of our meal.  Speaking of our meal, we started it off by ordering a few Bellinis
Cody ordered a Patty Melt {fontina cheese, carmelized onions, dijon sauce on rye toast}, while I opted for a burger, the Lowrider {Ano chilis, pepperjack cheese, red onions, lettuce, tomatoes} which also comes with freshly cut onion rings {and we all know that I’m a sucker for onion rings, and if you didn’t know, you do now.}
We ended our meal by eating a Maple Bacon Donut
it sounds better than how it taste, they have MUCH more impressive and tastier desserts on their menu that I suggest you get instead.  After filling our bellies we met up with Clyde at the Griffith Observatory,

he then took us up the Hollywood hills to the closest point you can get to the Hollywood sign
which made for some spectacular photos
Cody & I wanted to see the neighborhood where Clyde works {which is gorg!} and I'm happy we did this, because I ended up finding a store called Heavenly Couture where NOTHING is over $15!  When I asked if this was true, the lady pointed to a wall where in HUGE bold words “REALLY, NOTHING IS OVER $15!” was painted.   I ended up spending $140.00, I got tons of stuff!!  After my retail therapy we drove down Hollywood blvd since Cody has never been.  He got to see the the stars on the ground, Grauman's Chinese theater,
and we drove around fancy neighborhoods while Clyde pointed out famous people’s houses, it was like having our own personal tour guide!
We ended the night with dinner at In & Out Burger & then it was off to bed.  We had been out for over 9 hours!!!  If it wasn't for Clyde we wouldn't have had as much fun, so thank you so so so much for taking time out of your life to spend an entire day with us & show us around, WE LOVE YOU CLYDE!

Day 6- June 10th: The PCH & Malibu
Since we were gone so long the previous day, we wanted to do something with the puppies, so we packed the truck with beach essentials, loaded the dogs, and headed down The PCH to explored Malibu

to see the insanely gorgeous landscapes

& even more insane houses

We also drove through Pepperdine University {I can’t believe people get to learn there} & the views those students get to see every day, are incredible

and the grass reminded me of Dr. Sues books!

Walking around made us hungry, so we drove down the coast until we found a place called Giovanni Ristorante Italiano.

The owner is originally from Brooklyn, NY so we took our former Austin, TX waiter's advice and order some pizzas, which were amazing.

Originally we were going to go to a beach in Malibu that I was told was a dog friendly beach, but I was lied to, it wasn’t, so we ended up going home to drop off the dogs, take a quick nap, change, & then back out to Santa Monica Pier.

The BEST part was when Cody & I went into a photo booth that takes 5 different photos.

The 1st photo, horrible, we were trying to figure out where to look, etc… the 2nd photo: Normal & cute, the 3rd & 4th photos were us being silly and the 5th photo we kissed… WELL, while we were kissing we hear what sounded like a heard of people say, “AWWWWWWWWWWWWE!  so Cody opened the curtain and there were at least 13 people standing outside the booth watching a TV screen of us inside the booth!!!!!  It was hilarious, I was laughing so hard and paying attention to Cody & the group’s conversation that I just hit “enter” not realizing that you don’t get a sheet of all 5 photos, just 1 picture… and of course I accidentally picked the 1st one which was THE WORST ONE!
*Photo proof coming soon*

It was so funny!!!  After being thoroughly embarrassed we took a ride on the iconic Ferris Wheel.
It took me a while to calm my nerves, I’m super afraid of heights, but I found looking through a camera lens helps!
Once we enjoyed all the entertainment the pier had to offer we headed down to the beach to get a few shots of us with the Pier behind us.  It was a perfect way to end the day & our last night in Los Angeles...

ROADTRiP! DAY 3: The Grand Canyon

June 7th:
The Grand Canyon was by far one of my favorite places… EVER!

Originally we were going to arrive there by 4:30am to catch the sunrise at 5:00, but our eyes REFUSED to open at 2:30.  We ended up getting there at 8:00 am, but lucky for us, there weren’t many people visiting the Canyon that day.
It was cold when we left our hotel but by the time we arrived it started to “warm” up.  I had to take off my tights and boots & switch to flip flops {good thing I was wearing a dress...of course}.
I can’t explain the Grand Canyon, it’s something you have to see for yourself, with your own eyes, pictures don’t do it justice.
Those traveling with dogs, there are two main trails that allow them if leashed.  There is even a driving trail with places for you to park along the way so you can snap a few photos.   Our dogs did phenomenal there, they made us look good!  Diesel let people pet him, Lashes didn’t pull on her leash, & they posed for photos {I brought my tripod & remote everywhere with me}.
After spending 3 hours walking & marveling at the great vastness that is the Grand Canyon, we got back on the road to reach our main destination, Venice Beach

ROADTRiP! DAYS 1 & 2: Home to Flagstaff, Arizona

Hey everyone!  I finally got my information together, slide shows created, & thoughts down on paper {virtual paper of course} so I can now officially post about our vacation!  For those of you that don’t know; Codiy & I took an 11 day roadtrip from Texas to the Grand Canyon, to Venice Beach, to San Diego, & ended back at our home in Texas.  It was an amazing trip that we’d do all over again.

June 5&6th
Days 1 & 2 of our roadtrip is about getting us to Flagstaff, Arizona & the few things we were able to do once we arrived in the short amount of time we were there.

Just in case you didn't want to watch the entire slide show {*tear} or you did watch it, but you want more details {*smile}, I aim to please, so here is a break down of those first two days.

We woke up refreshed and roaring to go, but unfortunately, we left later than we wanted {2 hours to be exact} due to a packing issue.  Let’s face it, we BOTH took advantage of not having restrictions on luggage so we each had 2 suitcases and 1 storage tub… well, I had 3 suit cases, but who’s counting?  Just in case someone reading this is about to embark on our same adventure, here is a list of the stops we made along the way to Arizona:

1.  5:30 pm: Fort Woof Dog Park: Very nice dog park but it needs more shaded areas.  We only stayed 30 min due to it being over 100 degrees & humid, the dogs weren’t even playing.  We did meet some really nice people that were just as chatty at us.

2.  6:10 pm: Lisa’s Fried Chicken: The people that worked there were very nice, the restrooms were clean, and the gas was the cheapest in the area.  I was told later, and I quote, “You were in the hood girl!  Get out why you can!” Hood or not, this white girl would go there again, but the traffic getting back onto the freeway was horrible!

3.  9:55 pm: McDonalds: Very clean restrooms & a grassy median for the dogs but toooooooons of 18 wheelers that did a good job of freaking Diesel out.  The people weren’t terribly nice though, but it’s McDonalds, what did we expect?

4.  12:15 am: Wal-Mart Super Center: Open 24 hours, gas was decently priced, & the restrooms were clean.  Plus I was able to buy more Rockstars.

*Time Change Converted*

5.  New Mexico State Line: We have a goal to take a photo with every state sign, New Mexico was our very 1st one since making it, thanks NM!

6.  1:08 am: Russell’s Travel Plaza: This place is a traveler’s dream, ESPECIALLY if you’re traveling with dogs!  Their truck stop had the usual chotsky items for sale, nice bathrooms, etc… BUT it also had a fenced in dog run so your dogs could roam & play w/out a leash, it was fantastic.

7.  4:08 am: Waffle House: Horrible restroom! It wasn’t dirty but the toilet was halfway under the handicap bar making it incredibly hard to pee and there were a few bums hanging around the entrance creating a barrier when you tried to exit, they actually have to have an officer work the night shift there, so we didn’t stick around.

8.  4:23 am: Sky City Cultural Center: Very nice restrooms & next to a casino if you're feeling lucky.  We stopped here to let the dogs grub down on their breakfast

*Time Change Converted*

9.  6:25 am: Arizona State Line: We finally made it to Arizona!!

10.  7:06 am: Navajo Travel Center: This was the only place open which we found odd since it was 7:00 in the morning but it was a decent little stop, I'm just glad we found it.
11.  Meteor Landing Detour: We did drive the 8 miles off course to check it out, but we ended up not stopping due to the fact it was hot outside, it would’ve cost money, and the dogs couldn’t go inside, BUT we did see the outer wall, and that was still cool!

12. 8:45 am: La Quinta Inn & Suites: We finally arrived at La Quinta Inn & suites and there were only two rooms clean at the time of our arrival, we opted for the one that was on the 1st floor closest to grass to make it easier on all of us.  We unpacked our truck, made a make shift sandwich with our smashed bread {thanks Diesel}, & took a well-deserved 4 hour nap…

DAY 2- June 6th: Flagstaff, Arizona
…After waking up from our nap, showering, & bushing our teeth, we took the dogs to Thorpe Dog Park.  It was a huge sand pit!  The dogs got filthy there but the weather was amazing, the people extremely friendly, & we got a lot of good tips of places to stop & eat while in San Diego.  After the dogs were tired out, we stopped back off at La Quinta to spruce ourselves up for dinner

We found a place to eat that was on the show, “Diner’s Drive Ins & Dives,” Guy ate at Salsa Brava and he made it look amazing, so that’s where we went.   While waiting for our table the hotel called & alerted me about some complaints they’ve been receiving about a dog whining in our room, so poor Cody drove back to the hotel and as he was walking to our room he could hear Lashes from down the hall crying, it had been over 30 minutes!  Poor kid, she did NOT like that room and we felt so bad for the other guest.  I guess their peanut butter filled kongs weren’t good enough.  Since it was only 45 degrees outside we desided they could relax in the car while we enjoyed a nice sit down meal and it was delicious!

Their margaritas were super tasty too, different than the ones we get in Texas, these were more like a slushies

Our waitress was super nice, we found out that she was actually about to make a move to Austin, TX with her best friend who was also a bubbly Scorpio from Texas, so we hit it off with her right away.  After stuffing our faces, talking with locals, & drinking a few margaritas, we decided it was time to head back to the hotel where we all crashed!

ROADTRiP TOOLS

Sorry I didn’t hold up my end of the deal and post every night like promised but I was exhausted.  I tried typing while passengering but I got car sick so that didn’t last past a few sentences.  I finally completed editing & condensing 5,000+ pictures & I'm in the process of creating multiple slideshow with music to showcase them, I hope it all pays off in the end, and again, I’m sorry for the delay!  To move forward & post something about our roadtrip, I desided to give you all the tools we used to make our roadtrip a success.  We would do everything EXACTLY the same way, it was so much fun!

These are the sites, apps, & strategies we used:

 ·  Create a Google account, I SWEAR it pays off, plus you can have another email address to receive a 20% off coupon from Bed Bath & Beyond

·   Make sure to load Google Maps onto your smart phone, it allows you to access your saved maps that are on your Google account creating a stress free {and paperless} trip.

·  Plan to stop every 3-4 hours or 300 miles, depending upon your car’s mileage.  Again, Google Maps was my knight in shining armor when it came to this {As he always is!}.  Here is an example of the route I created {we did end up stopping at other places, but I'm going to cover that later}:
*Note the stop at the Grand Canyon and Google already has these icons loaded for you to choose from

·  Latitude on Google+ allows your friends & loved ones to be able to track your journey OR if you want to track your own, with time stamps, I highly recommend joining.

·  Load the app Gas Buddy onto your phone!  You can look up gas by zip codes, cities, or around your location {Which is what we did}.  When we were around 280 miles I’d start looking up gas stations along the route we were driving.  It was extremely helpful & because of this app, we never paid over $4 a gallon, which is something to gloat about in California!

·  Make an accessible lunch/snack kit.  We didn’t want to waste a lot of time or money stopping to eat so we had one big ice chest in the bed of the truck filled with goodies, but we also had a smaller one in the backseat filled with Energy Drinks, lunch meat, mayo, cheese, & snacks.
*Note: do NOT leave your snacks in a mesh bag on the floor of your car if you have a dog, they will step on it and smash all your goodies.
Example 1: Zebra PANcakes

 ·  Play games!  We all know the billboard/sign alphabet game & punch buggy, but my favorite of the trip was the memory alphabet game, but I don’t think Cody enjoyed it as much as me {he's such a cheater!}

·  Grab about 20-50 of your favorite or recently watched DVDs for the road.  Movies are 2-3 hours long & since you’re stopping every 3-4 hours they help kill time between stops.  The reason I suggest bringing the ones you’ve seen the most benefits the current driver since they can’t watch the movie.  Seriously, the driver better not be watching the movie!
·  Pandora became a sanity savor for us.  Since we took shifts sleeping the comedy channel became our best friend.  We have an axillary jack that hooked our truck up to our iPad.

·  Invest in Car Phone Charges!!  If you didn’t get one at the time of purchasing your phone, this is an obvious must, especially if you’re using GPS on your phone.  We bought a charger that had a spot for 2 phones for those of you with a single option.

·  Veer off track!  Don’t try to stick to your schedule or to your route.  If you see something interesting along the way, stop!  This makes for a better & more fun roadtrip.  Plus, things never go as planned, so you’re just setting yourself up for failure if you strive for perfection.  One of my favorite moments was pulling over to let the dogs eat & drink when we arrived in Arizona.  It was early in the morning and we watched the sunrise over a mountain while we stretched our legs

·  If you’re traveling with dogs, STOP AT DOG PARKS along the way.  Everyone gets a chance to stretch their legs, it tires the dogs out so they won’t annoy you in the car, & it gives you a chance to meet new people that can tell you cool places to stop along your journey!  If you don’t know how to search for dog parks, I used Google & BringFido.com.  Also, if you layer “dog parks” on top of your route you can choose to visit the one that won’t take you too far off course.

·  The most important advice I can give is an obvious one.  RELAX!  You're on vacation, enjoy every moment.  If you get lost, eh, who cares?  Embrase it, stop somewhere to eat a meal, or just for dessert, make it worth the "mistake!"
